The Business of Pleasure is a rip-roaring, rollercoaster ride of sexual indulgence; eloquently written, at times shocking, and always entertaining. It’s a complex weave of tales, told in both the first and third person, and the consistent character, who we keep nipping back to, is Charlotte. Charlotte sets out to sate her darkest desires and ends up working for the company that promises to deliver the goods for even the fussiest of deviants. Charlotte sets out to sate her darkest desires and ends up working for the company that promises to deliver the goods for even the fussiest of deviants. She’s a great character, horny and kinky, and has just the right level of emotional involvement with her employers as the story unfolds to keep it real and not all about the sex. I completely adored the way Ms Elyot skipped into the heads of other clients, her knack of drawing a reader in and making them understand what people want is really satisfying, especially when the end product is so skillfully written. BEST BITS: In all honesty, there a too many to name, but I will give it a go… “Charlotte and Pirate Collins seemed almost the only people in the room who weren’t fucking – writhing bodies, vanilla and chocolate and coffee, filled the divans with heaving, throbbing lust in action as far as the eye could see.” “Yes, Master,” she groaned in defeat. She had certainly wanted a creative sadist, and Collins was certainly fitting that description. Perhaps a little too well.” “He skewered two fingers up inside her, shaking her out of her dilemma over smoked salmon sandwiches or poached eggs on toast.” “A real prostitute would not have used up so much on one fuck. I need to remember to lie back and think of…” “Any amount of fungus might be blooming beneath his perfect skin. His broad chest could be full of deadly spores. I might put my lips up to his to be kissed, only to find the sweetish stench of decay wafting from his mouth. Ulcer, sores, nail infections – all might hide inside a fashionable suit. – I have not had an orgasm other than by my deeply-disinfected vibrator in five years…” “He is sexy. Not obviously sexy, but sinuous, graceful, elegant, sardonic, jaded. It’s the way he moves and the tired eyes…” VERDICT: An amazing book which proves that this is one author who can really punch out the good stuff. Sumptuous sex scenes, lavish settings and orgasms that rock off the page. I urge you to pick it up and sink your teeth in. My time getting lost in this wonderful, if shady, world was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and it is a book I am sure I will not only be recommending but also one I will be dipping back into.

I loved this book! I think Justine writes the most amusing smut. I always get the giggles whenever I read her stuff. I think most BDSM is written so serious nowadays. It's lovely to have a book that shows how fun it can be. :D

Full of steamy action in lots of different forms !! ,

This story takes you on a tale of domination and submission. It is beautifully written and has great characters. Some of them I would love to meet, others I may not be quite so keen. The story is both entertaining and a little disturbing, the perfect combination for an erotic story. This is a book you should treat yourself to or maybe treat someone close, it could be well worth your while.

This is a must read for everyone, there is something wonderfully lude on every page. I wish there really was a number, or maybe I should see about starting one. Oh, the possibilities. The characters intrigue the mind making you envision them as real people, a quality I enjoy in a book.

I reviewed this for Erotica Revealed. As a huge fan of short fiction, the first thing I want to say about Justine Elyot’s The Business of Pleasure is that it reads half as short fiction, and half as a novella – and that this “short fiction” half is a good thing. As a huge fan of short fiction, the first thing I want to say about Justine Elyot’s The Business of Pleasure is that it reads half as short fiction, and half as a novella – and that this “short fiction” half is a good thing. The half that reads as a novella is about Charlotte – a submissive woman with a boring job who has decided to contact “the Number.” The Number is a business catering to the sexual desires of its clientele, and we see Charlotte live out her fantasy of being submissive to two men in the first chapter – and then return to Charlotte every other chapter thereafter. Charlotte’s course takes her further and further into the machinations of this company, and she gets more and more involved with the two strange men who run the Number. That these two men are dominant sexually – and both arouse her in different ways – is the major crux of Charlotte’s story, and the central tale to the narrative in general. Unfortunately, I had a hard time connecting to Charlotte’s story. The alternate chapters, however, were where The Business of Pleasure caught and kept my attention. As I mentioned, each reads almost as a short story – though some characters will carry over into another chapter or step into the Charlotte narrative – and involves a single client of the Number setting up their first appointment with the company and finding release from their daily lives. These chapters were more varied – though for the most part all the women in the book, with one exception, are submissive – and brought a more varied sense of sensuality to the book than the Charlotte chapters. I did find myself wishing that one or two of the women would have been a bit more sexually dominant, but the various scenes purchased by the women – the dirty mechanic shop, an exhibitionist window, a porn stage, a pleasure harem – weren’t cookie-cutter clones of each other. The characters themselves were also varied, and didn’t read as clones of each other. Though their fantasties were ones where they were treated as sexual objects, the women’s personalities weren’t all passive and meek. Even the men involved –mostly actors picked up by the Number – had some depth to them in a few of the non-Charlotte chapters. These stories were where it was at for me, and I’d say that if you’re a lover of short erotic fiction, they’ll suit you. The Charlotte story itself left me frustrated at times, though not in an erotic sense. Throughout the whole story, The Business of Pleasure has scorching, well-written erotica. There’s the occasional turn of phrase that might make you blink (orgasms that take off like a jet pack?) but the overall scenes and erotic interactions are hot. It was Charlotte’s incredibly submissive character that I had trouble connecting with. Her dilemma (which man of the two men) annoyed me at times, since in my reading experience it seemed that she only emotionally connected with one of the two men. It left me feeling like it should have been an easier decision, but this isn’t to say it didn’t make sense for Charlotte to waffle. She is a character not very able to be forceful in any way, and making a choice was a part of this. Unfortunately, that left me more annoyed with her than empathetic to her. If there had perhaps been a few stronger women in the storylines tucked between the Charlotte pages, this might not have stuck out so much. Charlotte is one of the most submissive personalities I think I’ve read in erotica so far – and between all the other women who desired to be treated as whores or tarts or sluts, it just hit a point of overload in my mind. I needed a woman – or two – to take charge to take the reader in a different direction for a moment. If you like erotica with submissive women, however, this story will suit you more than fine. I didn’t realize I had this bias until about three quarters of the way through. As I said, the alternating non-Charlotte chapters read like high-heat erotic short stories – and I did enjoy those. I’m curious to see if Elyot has any short fiction collections, as I’d be interested in reading those.

This is the first book that I have read by Justine Elyot and all I can say is Wow! The main story is about Charlotte a submissive who wants to be dominated by two men, so she contacts The Number. They are an organisation who makes fantasy in to reality for people no matter what or how detailed that may be. Collins and Bryant have been looking for a submissive that will live up to what they need and they think they have finally found that in Charlotte so they set up the fantasy just as she has described to them on her application with themselves as the main characters. Charlotte’s fantasy is everything she could have dreamed of but then she finds herself back in her day to day life wondering how she is going to be able to experience what she so badly needs again. Then, out of the blue, Bryant turns up at her work with a proposition that she just can’t say no to. I was impressed with Charlotte and her ability to handle the situation that she found herself in after her fantasy night was over. She was honest with herself over what she really wanted from life and was willing to take the steps needed to make it a reality. I also liked the way that Collins and Bryant valued and were careful with Charlotte even when they were providing her with the things her submissive nature required. They understood her and wanted to do whatever was necessary to ensure her needs were met in every possible way. As the story proceeds there are other customers fantasies interspersed throughout. To start with I found this quite jarring and disjointed as it was unexpected but as Charlotte’s story continues it becomes clear that some of the people featured in these fantasies would play a part in the main plot. The relationship that develops between Charlotte, Collins and Bryant is believable and built on the trust that they each have for each other which made this much more plausible to me. The twist wasn’t what I expected but it also made the whole set up seem much more realistic to me than if they had just had their happily ever after. I found this book to be an exciting insight in to the BDSM world and would recommend it to someone who is looking for a well developed erotic story where the characters are believable and the sex is intense!

Whilst I enjoyed the premise of this story, I sometimes thought the author tried a bit too hard to mention every kind of sex act she could come up with, which is not actually a bad thing, but because they are short stories you have to pack a whole lot in. The main, perhaps only fault was the use of words and phrases to describe the various sex organs- I know you have to vary these descriptions, but I prefer a c.... to be called a c....(KWIM) The "Business" in the title is two men and their "staff" making sex fantasies come true. Charlotte (our heroine) is in the first story and she is then hired by them in a professional manner as a researcher and takes to their beds in a personal manner. I would have liked to have connected more with these two men, but they do come across as cold and unfeeling, although one is slightly more "friendly". But then they are Doms and sadists to boot so I know we are not meant to see their softer sides. We follow their relationship growth along with the naughty fantasies of their clients.

Another winner from Justine Elyot. This one blends experiences from a female character calle Charlotte with experiences from individuals who pay for the services her company provide - bringing sexual fantasies to life. Clearly I need to look into whether the author has written longer novels. All in all, a wonderful book and one I will definitely re-read at some point.

Ugh, to be honest, I'd give this .5 stars, but being generous I'll go with 1 I mainly got it because after reading the description, it sounded interesting. But, I just couldn't get into it. The POVs switches were distracting, confusing, and really annoying toward the end. It jumped around a lot, so it was hard to get into the main characters. I love the concept at the base of this book. Actually I wish the number really existed and that any and all fantasies I have could be experienced that way... Or experience the pleasure to work there as an employee... Well, until you get so lucky, I sincerely recommend this read to anyone curious and open about, oh well, everything. The spankings are gutsy and the sex scorching, but, even better the ideas are rocking. Great collection of stories that deserved to be read and talked about!

There are many stories in this book, tied together by one overarching plot. This was a fine way to organize the book, but there were far too many happy endings. And not the sexy kind. I mean, I guess there were those too, but you know? Anyway, the smut quality was good. Raunchy, but not too raunchy. I'm giving it smut-stars.

First off, I'm not a prude. This book just used the kind of language that made me think 'urgh' on each and every page. The story of Charlotte, a submissive with 2 'masters' is told every other chapter with a different spin off, sexual fantasy chapter in between. I almost abandoned this several times but didn't so I suppose it can't be THAT bad, just want for me. Sorry.

The story of Charlotte, a young submissive, and her relationship with Collins and Bryant, two older dominants who run a company that organises sexual fantasy fulfilment events for women. Smutty throughout, often shocking, what interested me most about this book was how Charlotte's story was interwoven with the stories of various clients. Very clever. Recommend.

I enjoyed Charlotte's story, as well as the client vignettes, but I found the POV shifts to be disconcerting. I would have probably rated this book higher if the transitions had been smoother and pulled the disparate parts of the book together in a clearer way.

One of the filthiest books I ever read, but I really enjoyed the read. Lot’s of secret fantasies fulfilled and Justine Elyot’s way of filling your head with imagination is just marvelous! Loved it and would recommend it to everyone who enjoys some real kinky stuff!

So i read this book and tried to understand it but it did not make sense. It was setup that every other chapter was not about the main characters and that drove me crazy. I didn't need to know about other people. I don't think that I will read any more by this author.
