My Review: Oh what a tangled web vile and duplicitous snobs can weave just to save face. I enjoyed this cleverly knotted and intriguing tale, it progressed slowly yet I enjoyed every little twist and turn. The ending may seem far-fetched unless you understand the social influence and structure of small-town living, then it becomes all too plausible. The storylines were easy to follow, engaging, deliciously spiced, and pricked my curiosity. I am itching to uncover more about the secondary characters Ms. Jackson was taunting me with – she is such a clever tease! I was enamored with her large and varied cast and am primed for return trips.

That was the case for me when I came across Love in Catalina Cove while browsing through Netgalley. I kept coming across the book and the cover whore in me kept screaming to request it, so I finally did just that. I just hoped that I wouldn't be let down by taking a chance on this new-to-me author. Vashti Alcindor vowed never to return to the small town of Catalina Cove after loss and humiliation ruined her life. But years later, Vashti is brought back to the seaside town when she inherits her late aunt's bed and breakfast and must decide what she wants to do with it. Unable to walk away from the place she once called home, Vashti decides to stay a while and hopes to restore her aunt's bed and breakfast back to its glory days. It also helps that the new sheriff in town is easy on the eyes and Vashti finds herself drawn to the man of few words. But when a revelation about Vashti's past comes to light, her world is turned upside down and she'll have to face her past head on if she wants to uncover the truth. I didn't have a clue of what I was getting myself into when I started this book. I didn't read the blurb beforehand and I've never read any of Brenda Jackson's works before so I was literally going into this series completely blind. Love in Catalina Cove started out in your typical small town romance fashion and I was totally loving it. I was getting to know our main characters and learning about all the secrets of the people of Catalina Cove and I was living for the scandalous gossip. But then Brenda Jackson decided to turn things up and lawwd, I was not expecting this story to take the direction that it did! Yo gurl was shook. It was plot twist after plot twist and even our plot twists had plot twists. Now, sometimes a story with so many plot twists can come off as being too over dramatic, but that was not the case for this book. Everything had a great flow and I loved how the story came full circle by the end. I would have never expected a story like this to have an ending like that and I gotta applaud Brenda for pulling off all these twists off!  Vashti is one of my favorite characters in this book. Her story, her past, her struggles all broke my heart and I was just hoping that somehow she would be able to find real, true happiness by the end. I honestly wanted to fight everyone who turned on her because she was a child herself when she lost her own baby and she didn't deserve the treatment she got. She's definitely a character with a great amount of strength because she went through hell and back and there were many times that I thought she would break down while reading this book. But she kept on fighting and searching for the truth and all that pain and suffering was worth it by the end because what she got was something rarely few people ever get: a second chance. There is a romance between Vashti and Sheriff Sawyer Grisham and it's kind of a slow burn at first but things heat up once these two work through some of their issues. Vashti and Sawyer's relationship was also put to the test in this book and I was seriously on edge because I hardcore shipped them together and I was not going to stand for any sinking ships. As for Sawyer, he too has his own past with a few secrets but I don't want to give any of that away since it does tie into some of the twists for this story.  Love in Catalina Cove was a thrilling read that kept me at the edge of my seat and I highly recommend it to those who love their romances with a dash of suspense! I eagerly await for the next installment in this series and this time I'll be prepared for all the plot twists because I know Brenda Jackson is gonna be serving up some craziness in the next one.

Overall, Love in Catalina Cove is a passionate, heartfelt start to this new series by Jackson that has a large, intriguing cast of characters that I look forward to reading more about in Forget Me Not (Catalina Cove #2) due to be published in Spring 2019. Thank you to Harlequin Books for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

I know I am going to be in the minority when I say Love in Catalina Cove was just an OK read for me.. I wanted to love it, but I just didn't. I did like the setting and most of the characters. The little town of Catalina Cove sounds like it is a place I'd love to visit. I also liked the two main characters, Vashti and Sawyer. I felt bad for Vashti for what happened to her. I also liked Sawyer's relationship with his daughter Jade. Their relationship was really neat and fun to read. What I didn't care for so much was the story or the romance. I felt no connection between Vashti and Sawyer. I think it was supposed to be a slow burn, but it was just too slow for me. The story, once we get to the secret surrounding Vashti. was really unbelievable. I can suspend disbelief sometimes, but I just couldn't in this one. There were way to many coincidences. There was one big one that I just couldn't believe would happen. It really lessened my enjoyment of the book. The overall book isn't badly written and I think fans of this author will try it out. It is the first in the series, so maybe the other books will be more enjoyable for me.

I honestly did not know what to expect going in, but I'm a huge fan of a couple of the author's other series and I don't think you can go wrong with Brenda Jackson. I'll say other than having cursing a storm at the end of the book, it was actually very enjoyable to read, with very little angst and a lot of drama, which was quite appropriate given the subject matter. Vashti Alcindor planned to never return to Catalina Cove with good reason, but the issues surrounding her inheritance of her aunt's B&B mean she has to break that promise to herself but the potential reward at the end is too good to pass up. Getting a speeding ticket was certainly not in the plan but how else could she have met the town's sexy new sheriff? Sawyer Grisham gave up a flourishing career in the city for chance to bring his daughter up in a small town where they could heal after losing his wife to cancer and he is certain he would never care for another woman like he did his wife, but fate has a way of throwing a wrench in plans. With Vashti determined that she was done with men for good and Sawyer wanting to explore his feelings for her, it seemed they were at an impasse. Fate again steps in when Vashti discovers that her parents lied to her twenty years ago and her past and her future are tied to Catalina Cove, in more ways than one. I enjoyed the slow pace of the story and the fact that the author did not just limit us readers to Vashti and Sawyer's lives, but gave us insights into the lives of the secondary characters, along with creating an extended family of people brought together by fate for good. While Vashti had expected a huge sum of money, what she got was infinitely more valuable. About the cursing at the end? I'm not a fan of keeping toxic people in my life and it rubbed me the wrong way that Vashti sought to make up with her parents after the decades of massive lies and deceit from them, and even when they had a chance to some clean and own up, they refused to take it. Besides that, this was a really great start to this series and I'm really looking forward to the next book. Want more? Subscribe to my Newsletter on The Sassy Bookster. Most of the twists you see coming but this is still a very enjoyable read. The writing describing the town, the inn, and the beach transports you there. The characters are well written and interesting. There is going to be a sequel following other characters in Catalina Cove and I’ll be eagerly looking forward to that.

The whole town wondered who Vashti had been going around with but she told no one! The only people on her side was her Aunt and the island midwife, and they told her parents that Vashti could have stayed at the Inn owned and operated by her Aunt, and the midwife was extremely upset at the way Vashti's parents acted. After graduating high school she went to college for Hotel management and was so good she had the same job for 10 years. Vashti's aunt has died and so Vashi must go back to Catalina Cove to deal with the Bed and Breakfast Inn her Aunt left her. On the way from the airport, the new sheriff, Sawyer Grisham, pulls her over for speeding, which surprises her but she has a strange feeling about this man Sheriff Sawyer Grisham, and she can't help but notice how good looking he is! The story goes on from here and the plot is twisted time and time again so something that was thought dead long ago has come back up to Vashti and it also affects the Sheriff as well! It is the perfect beach read, or anywhere, and I think it would make a good book club choice!

There were times where the plot meandered a bit, and the ending felt a little rushed. However, overall this was so much fun to read. Almost like a soap opera, in a very good way. Genuine escapism, filled with irresistible love and unimaginable pain. Can I also mention, I can’t wait to read the next books? Brenda Jackson did a brilliant job of setting up the series and getting me invested in all of the characters, not just Vashti and Sawyer. Drama is coming… My favorite part of a romance is the love story, but vying for my affection is always any renovation or makeover. Slow moving. The last quarter of the book was surprising but ultimately I think it would’ve made a great short story.

I was excited to get this book, a “bombshell of a secret” sounded exciting. I also have a soft spot for Louisiana, so that was a bonus. I even teared up a little in a few spots. But I was mostly bored. My conundrum is that even though this book didn’t really do it for me, I could see that a lot of people WOULD enjoy it. Vashti has a checkered past that she holds against herself more than anybody else really does. When she’s forced to return to her hometown almost two decades after scandal, she’s well educated and has made something of herself. She’s inherited her aunt’s B & B which has fallen into disrepair, but Vashti has the training and knowledge to save it. Sawyer and his teenage daughter have been touched by tragedy, but they admire Vashti and stand by her side when everything starts going sideways. They teach her that family isn’t always a blood relation, sometimes it’s just about love. Here’s what bothered me: The secrets and mystery seemed to reveal themselves very early on. In the middle of chapter eight I had a LOT figured out already. If you’re one of those people who can watch a detective show and say, “He did it!” in the first 20% of the story, you’ll see everything coming a mile away in this book. True story- I slammed the cover shut on my Kindle and said, “Oh my God. I know what’s going to happen.” That’s no fun. I want to be shocked. Sequel Bait. There was enough backstory and explanation on characters, I started envisioning what would happen down the line to the rest of the townspeople. Extra Words. I’m sorry. I see this a lot, so I know it’s a popular writing style but I can’t stand it. If you allow me to witness a scene between two characters, I don’t want a blow-by-blow every time they tell someone else what happened. I’d much rather you cut the extra stuff and give me a shorter book. Have you ever witnessed something, and so many people ask you to retell the story that you begin to bore yourself? That’s how I feel when every detail and spoken word is recounted to every other character. Sexy Times. I liked the sex part of the sex scenes. However, I had a hard time believing people would think certain phrases when checking each other out. I know we’re all unique… but some of it left me confused, rolling my eyes, or ranting. I try to make sure I never put spoilers in my reviews, so I’ll word this carefully- Sawyer does something after a bout of lovemaking (I think it’s their second time) that would frighten most women. When you see a man do this in movies and TV, the girl is always freaking out, telling all her friends, and looking over her shoulder because she’s scared she’s now being stalked (and she usually is). But hey, we’re all different so maybe some women would think it’s hot. To each their own. The “love” started happening too fast. Vashti and Sawyer have been through some crap storms before meeting each other. Understandably, they aren’t ready to have a deep relationship in their life. They just want to explore the sexual chemistry between them. But when they decide it’s best to take a break from seeing each other, both of them start thinking that it’s not just sex, it’s feelings floating close to their heart that draws them to one another. Ummm, they’ve spent a few hours together a few times and had brain melting sex. I think the “feelings” are an excuse, in the moment, to get another great lay. I can’t say I blame them, but it’s lust not love at that point. I’m rating this particular book 2 stars because I think it could’ve been saved with a short stint in rehab. There were some great elements and characters, but the falling in love should take longer if it’s going to bust the romance stigma. Full disclosure: We received an ARC from NetGalley, free of charge. The whole town shunned her over the scandal of being a pregnant teenager- plus the fact that she refused to reveal who the father was. Vashti was determined to keep and raise the child- despite her parents' clear desire for anything else to happen. This event forever estranged Vashti from the town and put a strain on her relationship with her parents. She did become closer to her aunt, who ran an inn in town and who has now died, leaving it to her. However, her baby died shortly after birth. Vashti left the town and never looked back- until her aunt died leaving her with the inn. In her quest to sell it, Vashti must return to town to convince the zoning board to allow a developer to build a tennis resort on the property. However, when she returns, she finds the town has left her past behind- and she has loads of chemistry with the hot new sheriff. Sawyer has a 16 year old daughter named Jade who is the center of his world. When he had found out his girlfriend was pregnant, he had married her and never looked back. His daughter was born while he was on a military tour. His wife died a few years earlier of melanoma, and since then, it has been Jade and him against the world. He's never felt a desire to enter into a serious relationship- that is, until he pulls over Vashti for speeding (she was going 5mph over the 55mph limit- tough town!). The book heavily centers around the events of Vashti's pregnancy as a teen and what happened to her child/what happened in the past. We slowly get information about these events. From the synopsis and early book information, I got enough hints that I figured it out very quickly. In that way, I felt it was a bit predictable. That being said, it was still an emotional and engaging read. I completely felt for Vashti and her pain was so real and vibrant. I also liked Vashti and Sawyer as a couple with their directness and maturity. The town and people of Catalina Cove have so many secrets that the book contains many mysteries and reveals throughout. It felt at times like a soap opera- so much drama (and I'm totally there with popcorn!). Overall, I really enjoyed the story and getting involved in these characters' lives. I had so many feelings while reading it- be prepared to feel a whole roller coaster of emotion when you pick this one up! Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Brenda Jackson is one of my auto reads and I was really excited to see she was bringing us a new series. She has a great way of weaving everyone’s stories together when she does a series, so I love starting with the first in her series. All of her books can be read as standalones, but it pays off to read them in order. I started this one and it was a little slow to get into, but about half way through it really picks up and I wasn’t able to put it down. I love the little town of Catalina Cove and all the crazy personalities in the small quiet town. The story of Vashti and Sawyer is a good one. Her story makes any girl hungry for a happy ending cry because Vashti has been through, the proverbial, romance wringer. She’s been chewed up and spit out and her confidence in romance is nonexistent. Sawyer on the other hand, could care less about romance when he meets Vashti, but he comes around real fast. So fast he’s ready to hop a plane to NY City to see her. I love that, who doesn’t want someone to fly across the country to profess his interest? So it begins, but it ends in Catalina Cove where there are some hard lessons learned about family and how far they can go to protect their reputation and image, and how to be something different than your parents want you to be. Vashti and Sawyer both learn some hard lessons before their HEA. Brenda brings her trade mark twists and turns as usual and they actually make the story better. Usually they just add to it, but these twists really are the story. I’m giving this a 4 of 5 because although the story had twists that I didn’t see coming, I really felt Sawyer was too good to be true and wasn’t real enough in his mistakes with Vashti, also I felt the twists were too much of the story and if they weren’t there, the romance was too slow and not moving enough. I actually can’t wait to see what she has for us in the next one in the series because I know we will get to see this family’s development along with a new couple.

But, when he aunt dies and leaves her property, she finds herself right back in the place where she lost so much. Sawyer Grisham came to Catalina Cove for a fresh start. After losing his wife, he wanted to give him and his teenage daughter a new life. As the Sheriff of Catalina Cove, he doesn't want anyone in his business, so he keeps his private life away from the town until Vashti Alcindor literally blows into town. Their attraction is instant, their chemistry is explosive, but neither one of them is looking to start anything. However, it seems as though fate has other plans and their attraction is just the beginning of what ties them together. I really thought I had this all figured out. I thought I was going to be writing a review of how predictable the story was. Then there was a total piece of the puzzle that came out of nowhere and just had me intrigued all over again. I loved that. Even though I enjoyed the story when I thought it was predictable, I was even more riveted after that piece was added. Sawyer and Vashti has quite the connection right from the beginning. I understood both of their reasons for now wanting to get involved but also knew it was inevitable that they would. I enjoyed the town and the secondary character in the story and am looking forward to getting more of their stories, especially Bryce and Keagan. LOVE IN CATALINA COVE had a many twists and turns in the story and a lot of loss and betrayal. So it made the HEA that much more sweet. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and look forward to more books in the series. *Advanced Reader's Copy provided by Edelweiss and Publisher in exchange for an honest review*

Love on Catalina Cove is one of those stories that take hold of your emotions and don't let go even after you finish reading. When I read the premise, I knew I was going to fall in love Vashti's story. Even so, I wasn't prepared for the wonderful twists and turns that brought this story to life and made Love on Catalina Cove the best series opener I've ever read! Vashti has lived with a series of disappointments since her world changed at 16. She's carved out a life for herself in New York, but the death of her aunt and her inability to sell her inn brings her home to Catalina Cove. Instead of the disdain and gossip she expected she's met with open arms, a plea to reopen Shelby by the Sea, and the mystery of what really happened to the child she lost all those years ago. With the handsome sheriff, Sawyer Grisham, supporting her quest for the truth Vashti gains purpose and a future that doesn't seem as bleak as it may have before. I enjoyed every aspect of this story especially getting to know the residents of Catalina Cove. It's such a beautifully imagined place! You can just feel how the characters' histories have created a rich space to escape into. Catalina Cove is not only a melting pot of cultures and backgrounds, but a warm community eager for growth while maintaining its charm. I wish there had been a little more detail about the inn and how it fit into Catalina Cove, but I can understand how much of the story was taken up by the startling revelations Vashti uncovered. With its small town charm and plot that draws interest even beyond the sweet and sexy romance, Love on Catalina Cove is perfect for fans of RaeAnne Thayne or Brenda Novak. *ARC provided in consideration for review*

I absolutely, completely, and totally, enjoyed this book!!! I haven’t read a Brenda Jackson book in years and I am not sure why. I’ve always liked her books. I am so glad to have found her again. It had a great story line, well several really. Wonderful and interesting characters, all with a story. I wanted to know about all of them! The book had a captivating and suspenseful story plot keeping thoroughly intrigued and engaged. Vashti is a strong and independent woman, well she had to be with the hand life has dealt her. Traumatic teenage experience coupled with a shattered marriage would leave anyone with a hardened heart, yet, Vashti proves she’s still an incredible loving and caring soul. I loved that despite everything she still had a soft side and allowed herself to be open to new people and new experiences. Sawyer, wow! What to say about this hot alpha male?! He’s an ex-military man, now a sheriff. Another character that should have a hard edge. Yet, after losing his wife, we find him displaying an incredible gentleness with his teenage daughter. Their relationship is beautiful. He is such a great dad. Due to guilt, he fights his attraction to Vashti, feeling somehow like he is betraying his dead wife. To see these two great people finally come together is heartwarmingly awesome. But, of course the story doesn’t end there. The drama really begins to kicks up, as a hidden secret starts to unfold! One so devastating that it could be the end of the best relationship these two characters have ever found. I don’t want to give anything away, other than to say I really, really dislike Vashti’s parents. GRR! This story is a fantastic read! The fell in love with the characters and their relationships. I’m glad they had each other to weather the brewing storm. This book is definitely a must read!! I look forward to the next story in this series. But, I really can’t wait for Kaegan and Bryce’s story!!

Love in Catalina Cove starts a bit slow to me, as the stage is set for the new series. The characters are intriguing, both the main as well as the secondary cast and crew are attractive people, the kinds you want to get to know, and spent time with. Vashti Alcindor and Sawyer Grisham might seem at the first look like the total opposites with a little in common, but as I got to know them better, that was proved wrong. They are both focused, hard-working, professionals. They are kind and considerate people, they both love kids, and especially Jade, Sawyer's daughter. They are passionate and loving, yet logical and forgiving. I liked the connection between them, the slow burn developing into an inferno, the sizzling flame into something meaningful and lasting. They both had faced loss and heartache in their lives, the tragedies shaping them to be the people they are today. The betrayals by their loved ones, the surprises in the plot towards the end of the story, are stretching my imagination a bit too far with all the coincidences and twists of faith. I'm still digesting them, not sure what to make of it all. Regardless, the Catalina Cove with its inhabitants captured my heart. They pulled me into their lives, and I felt like a part of the small southern town while visiting them, getting to know them, and learning about their lives and loves, joys and heartaches. A compelling and enthralling start to the new series ~ Four Spoons

3.5 stars Let’s take a visit to Catalina Cove, Louisiana, a fictional seaside town an hour away from New Orleans, and apparently the blueberry capital of the USA. This is where Brenda Jackson’s latest novel takes place, out on October 30th. When I requested a copy of this novel, the description wasn’t available so I turned the pages not knowing what to expect, which initially attracted me to the book. When I requested a copy of this novel, the description wasn’t available so I turned the pages not knowing what to expect, which initially attracted me to the book. Vashti Alcindor reluctantly returns to her hometown of Catalina Cove after the death of her aunt. She’s hoping to sell her aunt’s bed and breakfast but must return home to convince the townspeople it would be a good decision. On her way, she is pulled over by Sawyer Grisham; the town’s newish sheriff and recent widower. There is an attraction there but their romance is quite the slow burn. Amidst the budding romance are secrets; his, hers, and the towns’. The main mystery in this novel turns out to be the details surrounding Vashti’s pregnancy. She thinks she knows everything but returning home gives her quite the surprise as she begins to uncover a web of deceit that leaves her wondering who she can trust, and whose version of the truth she should believe. There are quite a few plot twists in this novel that, honestly, I saw coming. The writing was on the wall pretty early on in the novel and I was simply waiting for the drama to be amped up a notch. I was more invested in the secrets than the couple though as Vashti and Sawyer were quite the slow burn. While I don’t mind a slow burn if there’s enough chemistry and angst involved in the novel to keep me interested, these two were lacking a little bit in the chemistry department for me. Love in Catalina Cove is a small town romance about deceitful family members, loss, and finding your way to love again. I must say that this novel set the stage for its secondary characters quite well and I’m interested to see where their stories will lead them.

And Sawyer and his daughter are right there beside her. Will she be able to face her new future, or will the past continue to haunt her? I probably picked this up because it’s set near New Orleans, a city I love. I’m not sure if I’ve ever read any of Brenda Jackson’s books before, but I enjoyed this book a lot, and I’m interested to read the rest of the Catalina Cove series. Vashti was an interesting character, but I liked how honest she was with herself. I did see the “big” surprises coming, but they were handled very well, regardless, and I read this straight through in one sitting. (Galley provided by Harlequin in exchange for an honest review.)
