On Treacherous Ground is the last part of the first Fargoer cycle. It has been clear for several of the stories, and especially Fargoer 6 - The Song of Wolf and Moose - that Vierra is on her return journey to her original home. The journey has been long and difficult, and it is not giving anything away to reveal that this episode describes how she finally arrives there. It has been clear for several of the stories, and especially Fargoer 6 - The Song of Wolf and Moose - that Vierra is on her return journey to her original home. The journey has been long and difficult, and it is not giving anything away to reveal that this episode describes how she finally arrives there. But homecoming is no more easy than the journey has been, and Vierra's people have had to face their own share of suffering and deprivation. If you had expected a simple celebration and happy reunion in this story, you would be mistaken. Indeed, in many ways On Treacherous Ground is a new beginning rather than an ending. But whatever comes out of this will necessarily have to move on a new direction - there are too many breaks and separations forced upon these people to simply pick up where they might have been otherwise. Vierra's experiences have opened her up to be more sympathetic to the difficulties of making life in this environment, but this does not necessarily mean that she sees eye to eye with the actions of her people. Some of them appreciate the stands she makes concerning hard choices, but others do not. The story delves further into the magical and spiritual dimensions of this culture than some of the others, and rightly so since Vierra is trying to reintegrate on many different levels. Her experiences bridge the outer and inner worlds quite seamlessly. In keeping with the traditions of her culture, the more esoteric experiences do not separate her from the world; rather they serve to shape or affirm difficult decisions and actions in the here and now. On a purely technical note, the translation of this story from Finnish has recovered from the minor slips I encountered in the previous two sections. I am told that edits are in progress to these and future readers may find a more uniform experience. All in all, a fine culmination to this part of the Fargoer story. Surely not a conclusion, and I look forward to whatever new tale emerges from the closing pages. I am very glad to give this story a 5* review. I have read through - and reviewed - these episodes as parts of a collection of short stories, but at the time of writing the collection is being turned into a novel.
